Bare domains are matched against a broad list of common TLDs, not the full IANA registry, so an unusual one may count as plain text. Anything with https:// in front always counts as a link.
Common questions
- Why does X show a different number from every other counter?
- X rewrites every link to a t.co address worth a flat 23 characters, and charges 2 for each emoji or CJK character. Most counters miss this.
- Are these limits current?

- Is my caption sent anywhere?
- No. Counting happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
- Which limit should I write to?
- The shortest one you are posting to, which is why the list is sorted that way. Post to X and LinkedIn and X's 280 is the real constraint, not LinkedIn's 3,000.
